Focus: Hope operates primarily in the Detroit Metropolitan area and is committed to intelligent and practical actions to over- come racism, poverty and injustice. Although Detroit was the 4th largest city in the U.S. in the 1960s, the population and the economic vitality of the city have faltered since. As of 2005, Detroit was considered to be the poorest city in the U.S. In 2007, the CQ Press designated Detroit as the most dangerous city in America. Detroit has also been ranked as one of the cities suffering from the highest rates of obesity. The current NRF supported Focus: Hope program helps the children of Detroit by expanding the Focus: Hope after school program and summer camp. This program seeks to keep children engaged in healthy, pro-social activities rather than falling into a deviant lifestyle. The after school period is especially important due to the gap in the supervision of children. Similarly, the summer camp provides a safe place for youth to grow while they’re out of school and their parents are still working. The program does more than just supervise the youth. It promotes math, reading and physical fitness skills, while helping the youths’ guardians become more involved in their education.
